•Sodium hydroxide – Commonly known as lye, is a necessary ingredient in the traditional soap-making process. While it may sound intimidating, lye is essential for transforming oils and fats into actual soap through a natural chemical reaction called saponification.
 
During saponification, the triglycerides in the fats and oils react with the lye, breaking down and bonding to create soap and glycerin—a moisturizing byproduct that helps keep your skin soft. Though lye is used at the beginning, there is absolutely no lye left in the final product. Once the reaction is complete and the soap has fully cured, you're left with a gentle, nourishing bar that’s safe for even the most sensitive skin.
